day 1

Edinburgh to Dunkeld

Delve into Scotland’s fascinating history in the footsteps of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce with a visit to its ancient capital, Stirling, or strike northwards reliving the magic of Outlander on your journey into the Highlands.

day 2

Cairngorms National Park

Encounter Britain’s largest national park to reach the epicentre of malt whisky country and the Moray Firth. Pause for reflection at Culloden’s infamous battlefield or detour to picturesque Cromarty and the Black Isle en route for delightful Dornoch.

day 3

From coast to coast

Traverse moor and mountain, from east to west to reach a truly superlative stretch of Scottish coastline, pivotal in WWII history with sandy beaches, whitewashed cottages and glorious island views set against a jagged mountainous backdrop.

day 4

Conquering the Bealach na Ba pass

Take on arguably the most classic drive of the NC500 by conquering the Bealach na Ba pass, an old drovers’ road peppered with Highland cattle. Stop for the best seafood lunch at a humble blue cabin on route to the magical island of Skye.

day 5

Discover stunning Skye

Mystical Skye is an intriguing mix of moody mountains, fairy pools, peaty malts and fabulous fruits de mer. Admire the pretty pastel buildings of Portree, sample a wee dram at the Talisker Distillery or freshly hand-shucked oyster at the Oyster Shed.

day 6

Scotland’s most iconic castle

Float back in style to the mainland by Kylerhea’s legendary turntable ferry or crest the Skye Bridge to Scotland’s most photographed castle, Eilean Donan. Glimpse the Jacobite Steam Train at Glenfinnan Viaduct to end your day in peaceful Port Appin.

day 7

The wonderful West Coast

With Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’ on the doorstep, a plethora of islands including magnificent Mull and cute Kerrera are visitable in one day. Go car-less to tiny Lismore or over the bridge to sleepy Seil to discover that ‘less’ is generally ‘more’.

day 8

Over the sea to Islay

Soak up classic coastal Argyll scenery on a trajectory south to Kintyre, skirting oyster famous Loch Fyne before hopping aboard the Kennacraig ferry to wild and rugged Islay, Scotland’s floating capital of single malt whisky.

day 9

A true taste of Islay

Deeply rooted in ancient Celtic culture, history and tradition, this wild and naturally beautiful island packs a punch for wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, historians and lovers of seafood not to mention iconic malts such as Laphroig, Bowmore and Ardbeg.

day 10

Castles, lochs and mountains

Sail back to Kennacraig with views and marine life aplenty to embark on a drive into the gloriously rolling landscapes of the Trossachs, at the heart of which languishes romantic Loch Lomond, inspiration to many a poet, artist or enraptured traveller.

day 11

“The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond”

Relax on an exploratory boat ride in the shadow of Ben Lomond around this vast beguiling loch with its host of tiny islands and resident ospreys and sea eagles before heading back later to the city.

    Cairngorms natiOnal park

Welcome to Britain’s largest national park where heather-clad mountain peaks, deep forests and diminutive lochs provide essential sanctuary for the country’s rare and endangered wildlife including red deer and golden eagles.

A veritable paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, it is also the favoured summer destination for the Royal Family who annually retreat to Balmoral Castle on delightful Deeside where a clutch of charming villages host traditional highland games. Add in a dash of locally distilled malt whisky to complete the quintessential Scottish highland landscape.

    lismOre, Seil & kerrera

Cast adrift off the beautiful Argyll shore lie a trio of easy to reach lesser known Hebridean islands where the pace is quite literally pedestrian. Enjoy a car-free exploration of low-lying Lismore with its ancient Norse and Gaelic past and jagged castle remains or cross the aptly named ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ to reach tiny Seil, one of the slate islands. Minuscule Kerrera, a mere hop across the Sound, is home to a herd of wild goats and a haven for playful otters, all easily discovered on foot.

    iSlay

If the name Islay sounds familiar, it’s probably because some of the most popular whiskies in the world hail from this windswept Southern Hebridean gem. Islay peaty malts are famously smoky and its southern coastline is the powerhouse of world-famous classics like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg.

Whisky apart, dramatic coastal seascapes, the 7 mile long Big Strand beach and an Italian restaurant inspiringly called Peatzeria are plenty reasons to make the pilgrimage here.

    wild assynt

Extend your journey to the farthest-most north-westerly corner of mainland Britain and one of Europe’s last untouched corners. Traverse the empty Flow Country to reach deserted beaches and sugarloaf mountain peaks, staying in Kylesku, one of our favourite locations.

    mull

Instantly recognisable by the cheerfully painted houses of the harbour town of Tobermory, Mull understandably draws attention. Diverse, culturally rich and picturesque, it’s easily accessible by boat from Oban and a jumping off point for a day trip to the Hebridean gems of hallowed Iona and Staffa and the fantastic Fingal’s Cave.
