the greAtest railway journey in tHe world
Take the 84-mile round trip along the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig by steam train to take in some of the most breathtaking views and iconic landmarks the Highlands have to offer. Enjoy the classic elegance of travelling by vintage rail past dramatic mountain scenery, vast blue lochs and sprawling beaches.
a jourNey to remember
Board The Jacobite by the foot of Ben Nevis at Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands. Enjoy the views over Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument as you pass over the 21 arches of Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films.
Further along the route, movie fans will recognise the silvery beaches of Morar, made famous in films such as Highlander and Local Hero.
Waiting at the end of the line is the bustling fishing village of Mallaig, which you can spend time exploring before re-boarding the train and returning to Fort William.
west Coast railways
The Jacobite is operated by West Coast Railways, the UK’s leading special train operator, running thousands of rail tours across the country using classic and modern diesel trains as well as historic steam locomotives.
West Coast Railways provided the steam engine and carriages used in the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies, and some of The Jacobite’s carriages and compartments are very similar to those used in the films.
planning your experiEnce
The Jacobite steam train trip is open seven days a week between March and October. We recommend taking the morning train at around 10:00 and arriving back into Fort William station at roughly 16:00.
