when to visit scotland

Inspiration

A road trip around Scotland offers an exciting and unique way to explore the country. From the rolling hills of the Highlands to the bustling cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, there is something for everyone in Scotland. But when is the best time to go? Let’s take a look at some of the factors you should consider when planning your Scottish road trip.

weather considerations

For most people, the weather is the primary consideration when choosing when to visit Scotland. But Scotland has a temperate climate, so visitors can expect mild weather year-round. However, if you’re planning a road trip during winter or very early spring, be prepared for rain—lots of it! March to November is good for undertaking the NC500, but the best time to visit Scotland is during spring (late March to May) and autumn (September to November). Summer months are generally warmer and drier but can also bring more crowds, especially in July and August when most European schools are on their summer break.

Temperatures are warmer by spring, with averages of 6°C to 15°C, although there will still be snow in the mountains of the Highlands and the Cairngorms. The summer months (June-August) are the warmest of the year (around 15°C), with extensive daylight hours in July and August the further north you go. From June, Scotland’s midges appear, lasting until the end of September.

seasonal events

Depending on when you plan your trip, you may be able to take in some of Scotland’s fascinating festivals and events. The Edinburgh International Festival takes place each August, while Hogmanay (New Year’s) celebrations are held throughout much of December and January. Other popular events include Burns Night in January and St Andrew’s Day in November. Many Highland games are held in May and June, although these do continue through to September. Schools break for the summer in July, and July and August are the busiest months of the year to travel.

These are peak times, so prices are generally higher and accommodation more difficult to find. We recommend booking early if you want to travel during one of the key festivals.

accommodation availability

Finally, take into account accommodation options before booking your trip. Hotel prices tend to peak during summer months, so if you want to save money on accommodation, it might be worth considering travelling during off-peak periods such as late autumn or early spring. Bear in mind that some areas—especially remote parts of the Highlands—may have limited availability at certain times of the year due to seasonal closures or small populations, so always double-check before making firm travel plans! Many sites and hotels close for winter from mid or late October.

At Celtic Routes, we are planning a year ahead, and we recommend you do too.

summary

No matter when you choose to explore Scotland on your road trip adventure, there will always be plenty of amazing experiences waiting for you! From sightseeing through stunning natural landscapes to taking part in traditional festivals, Scotland really does have something for everyone all year round. Before booking your ticket, make sure you consider all factors, such as weather. But if you’re planning to travel between March and October, you should avoid very bad weather.
