The wild red kites are fed every day of the year at Gigrin Farm in mid-Wales. From the farm’s five large hides just metres away from where the feeding takes place, get incomparable views of the majestic birds of prey swooping down to feast on the meat laid out for them. Numbers can vary from 300 to 600 depending on the weather and time of year, filling the air with impressive aerial feats as they dive and skim the ground before rising again suddenly with their meal.
Red kites
The magnificent red kite was once on the brink of national extinction but was saved by one of the world’s longest-running protection programmes. Red kites have a reddish-brown body and angled wings and are most recognisable by their distinctive forked tail. They have a wingspan of nearly two metres but are relatively light, meaning they’re incredibly agile in the air.
gigRin farm
Gigrin Farm is an 160-acre upland sheep farm in the heart of the Welsh countryside, overlooking the Wye and Elan Valleys. It became an official red kite feeding station in the early 1990s after a request from the RSPB, who had seen the owner at the time feeding the birds. At the time, around six red kites were roosting at the firm. By 2006, over 400 were visiting every day at feeding time and now that number has increased to around 600.
